How to Choose the Correct Fujitsu Mini-Split Healthy Air Filter

Fujitsu's optional Healthy Air filters come in three sizes that are not interchangeable, and the set your owner's manual lists is only part of the story. This guide covers which size your unit takes, which parts need holder frames, and how many filters you actually need over a year.

The Short Version

• Each indoor unit holds one Apple-Catechin filter and one Ion Deodorizing filter at a time. That pair is the "set" your owner's manual lists.
• The two filters are on very different schedules. The Apple-Catechin filter is replaced every 3 months. The Ion Deodorizing filter is washed every 3 months and lasts about 3 years.
• Over a year, one indoor unit uses four Apple-Catechin filters and one Ion Deodorizing filter. A second Ion Deodorizing filter is a useful spare to rotate in while the other dries.
• Fujitsu uses three sizes: UTR-FA16, UTR-FC03 and UTR-FA13. Buy the size your unit takes; they will not fit each other's frames.

Sizes are measured to the nearest 1/16" and are for the filter itself. Fujitsu sells each individual filter as a 2-pack under its own part number, and sells the 1 + 1 set under a separate part number. The part numbers look similar across the three series, so check the series as well as the number.

Why the 1 + 1 Set Isn't a Year's Supply

Owner's manuals list the Fujitsu set (for example, 9317250009 for the UTR-FA16 series) because that is what the indoor unit holds at one time: one Apple-Catechin filter and one Ion Deodorizing filter. Right below it, the manual gives two very different maintenance schedules, and that is where most of the confusion starts.

• Apple-Catechin filter (disposable): do not wash it, since washing damages the media. Replace it every 3 months. The treatment loses effectiveness as it ages, so keep spares sealed until you need them.
• Ion Deodorizing filter (washable): wash it every 3 months in warm water with a mild detergent, without scrubbing it with an abrasive pad or brush. Fujitsu notes it can be used for about 3 years.

Buying a 1 + 1 set every quarter leaves you with a drawer full of Ion Deodorizing filters you don't need. Here is what one indoor unit actually uses:

Why the Three Sizes Can't Be Swapped

Each series has its own length, holder frame design and clip locations. Even a small size difference means the filter will not seat in the frame, and a UTR-FC03 filter will not clip into a UTR-FA16 frame (or the reverse). The series your unit takes is set by the indoor unit model, not by preference.

Replacement Filters vs. Holder Frames

• UTR-FA16 and UTR-FC03: the filters do not include holders. You reuse the holder frames already on your large screen filters. If yours are cracked, brittle or missing, order the matching frames (see the table above).
• UTR-FA13: the filters come with their holders.
