Understanding the ICRA 2.0 Matrix
The ICRA 2.0 matrix, developed by the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE), classifies construction and renovation activities by project type and patient risk level. The classification determines exactly what containment, filtration, and monitoring equipment must be on site before work begins.
Class I
Minor Work, Low Risk
Inspection, non-invasive activity, painting without sanding. No dust generated. Low-risk patient areas only.
Filtration Required: None
Class II
Small Scale, Minimal Dust
Drilling, cutting into walls, minor demolition. Work completed in a single shift. Area cleaned immediately after.
Filtration Required: HEPA vacuum at point of work
Class III — HEPA Required
Moderate Dust, Moderate Risk
Work generating moderate dust near moderate-risk patient areas. Sealed barriers required. HEPA filtration mandatory throughout the project.
Filtration Required: HEPA air scrubber, sealed barriers, HEPA vacuum
Class IV — Full Containment
High Dust, High Risk
Major demolition, large-area construction in or near high-risk areas including oncology, ICU, surgical suites, and neonatal units. Full containment with continuous monitoring required.
