Abatement Technologies CAP500-UV Germicidal Residential Air Purifier
Product Details
The dirtiest part of your HVAC system isn't the filter. It's the evaporator coil — and most homeowners never think about it.
Your A-coil runs cold and wet every time your system cools. That makes it a perfect surface for mold and bacteria to grow, accumulate, and get blown through every vent in your house every time the fan kicks on. A standard filter does nothing about what's living on that coil.
The Abatement Technologies CAP500-UV installs directly above the A-coil and hits it with continuous, hospital-grade UV-C germicidal irradiation — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week — destroying bacteria, mold, viruses, and VOCs before they ever reach your living space.
No ozone. No chemicals. No ongoing filter costs. Just UV-C light doing what it's been doing in hospitals and pharmaceutical facilities for over 60 years.
Need odor elimination on top of germicidal protection? The CAP500-UVP adds controlled ozone output for homes with persistent pet, smoke, or water damage odors.
Who This Is For
- 🏠 Homeowners with forced-air HVAC systems who want a permanent, maintenance-light layer of germicidal protection
- 🤧 Allergy and asthma sufferers — reducing the biological load circulating through your air system can meaningfully improve symptoms
- 👶 Families with young children or elderly members who want to reduce airborne pathogen exposure year-round
- 🔧 Homeowners replacing a dead unit — if you already have a UV lamp system installed and it's failed, this is your direct replacement
- 🏗️ New installs — adding UV germicidal protection where there wasn't any before
Installation requires cutting a small hole in your ductwork or air handler cabinet and wiring to a standard 120V outlet. If you're comfortable with basic HVAC work and electrical, this is a realistic DIY project. If not, any HVAC technician can install it in under an hour.
How It Works
☀️ Hospital-Grade UV-C — The A-Coil Is the Target
The CAP500-UV is designed to be installed directly above your evaporator coil (A-coil) — the cold, wet component inside your air handler where mold and bacteria most commonly colonize in residential HVAC systems. Mounted in that position, the UV-C lamp continuously irradiates the coil surface and the air passing over it, destroying microorganism DNA so they can't reproduce. Every air cycle through your system runs through the kill zone.
The same UV-C germicidal technology has been used in hospitals, food processing facilities, and pharmaceutical manufacturing for over 60 years. The CAP500-UV brings that standard into your home without the ozone, the chemicals, or the recurring filter subscriptions.
⚡ 1,950 μw/cm² — Actual Output, Not Marketing Language
UV effectiveness is measured in microwatts per square centimeter at a given distance. The CAP500-UV delivers 1,950 μw/cm² at 6 inches — a meaningful germicidal output level, not a diluted consumer-grade figure. It also breaks down many VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) and associated odors in the process.
🔴🟢 Lamp Status Indicator — Know When to Replace
UV-C output degrades over time even when the lamp still appears to glow. The CAP500-UV takes the guesswork out with a built-in status indicator:
- Green — Lamp operating within acceptable range. You're protected.
- Yellow — Output declining. Schedule a replacement.
- Red — Lamp inoperable. Replace immediately.
An audible chirp alarm also triggers when yellow appears — so you don't have to check it manually to know it's time.
What It Destroys
- ✅ Bacteria — including mold-forming species living on the evaporator coil
- ✅ Mold and mildew
- ✅ Viruses
- ✅ VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds)
- ✅ Cooking, pet, and tobacco odors (via UV breakdown)
For homes with heavy odor problems from pets, smoke, or water damage, the CAP500-UVP's ozone output provides a more targeted solution for odor elimination.

Installation Overview
For best results, the CAP500-UV should be mounted above the A-coil inside your air handler cabinet. This is the highest-impact location — the lamp continuously irradiates both the coil surface (where mold colonies form) and the air flowing over it.
It can also be installed in the supply plenum if direct A-coil access isn't practical — you'll still get strong germicidal protection on airborne pathogens, just less targeted coil surface treatment.
What's required:
- Access to the interior of your air handler cabinet or supply plenum
- A small access hole cut for the lamp housing
- A standard 120V power outlet within reach (most air handlers have one)
- Basic tools — drill, hole saw or tin snips, screwdriver
Comfortable with HVAC and basic electrical? This is a realistic DIY project. Abatement's installation instructions are clear, and this unit is a known quantity in the trade.
Not your wheelhouse? Any HVAC tech can handle it in under an hour. If they're quoting you a new UV system and not familiar with Abatement Technologies, that's worth a second opinion.
Annual Lamp Replacement
Even when a UV lamp still glows, its germicidal output drops significantly as the lamp ages. Abatement recommends replacing every year (approximately 9,000 hours) to maintain effective protection. The built-in status indicator handles the timing — you don't need to track hours manually.

Important: The UV425 is the correct lamp for this model. It does not generate ozone. If you own a CAP500-UVP and need the ozone-generating lamp, that's the UVP425.
