Routine maintenance is essential to keep your ductless mini-split system working efficiently, and one of the most important tasks is cleaning the air filters. Dirty filters can restrict airflow, forcing your system to work harder and increasing energy consumption, which can lead to higher utility bills and even costly repairs. To ensure good indoor air quality and optimal system performance, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, Daikin, and most ductless mini-split manufacturers recommend cleaning the filters every few weeks.
Due to the specialized filtration design of mini-splits, it's recommended to clean the air filters every two weeks. If certain units in your home aren't used as often, they may not need to be cleaned as frequently. It's easy to check—just turn off the unit and open the front panel to inspect the filters.
Turn off the unit: Always power off your mini-split system before cleaning the filters. Leaving the system on while the filter is removed will circulate unfiltered air through your space.
Access the filters: Open the front panel of your indoor ductless unit to access the air filters. Some units may have multiple filters, so be sure to remove all of them for cleaning. If your unit requires tools, a simple screwdriver may be needed to lift the cover.
TIP: Ensure your filters are still in cleanable condition. If they appear overly worn or compromised, it may be time for a replacement filter.
Vacuum the filters: If there’s visible dust or grime on the filter, start by using a vacuum with a soft brush attachment to gently remove loose debris. This step is crucial for keeping your filters effective without damaging them.
Wash the filters: If debris remains after vacuuming, wash the filters with lukewarm water. Either let the water run over the filter to rinse it or soak the filter in water for tougher grime. Be careful not to scrub too harshly.
Dry the filters completely: Allow the filters to dry thoroughly before reinstalling them. Avoid drying them in direct sunlight, as this can damage the plastic frame. Make sure they are completely dry to prevent mold growth.
Reinstall or replace: If your filter is still dirty after these steps, it’s time for a replacement. Once the filter is clean and dry, carefully reinstall it into your mini-split system.
Important: Some mini-split systems include additional filters, such as anti-allergy or deodorizing filters. These types of filters are not washable and will need to be replaced periodically, according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
While regular filter cleaning is important, professional servicing should not be overlooked. It's recommended to schedule professional maintenance for your mini-split system twice a year. This ensures the system remains safe, energy-efficient, and long-lasting. Ignoring maintenance can lead to a decline in performance, safety issues, and even system failure, making it crucial for both home comfort and efficiency.
Lastly, remember to keep the area around your outdoor heat pump free of debris like plant material, as it can block airflow and reduce efficiency.
